CRA Seminars
The CRA Seminars provide the opportunity to foster interdisciplinary
research in astrophysics, gravitational wave physics, numerical
relativity and particle astrophysics. The seminars are open to
external participation via phone conference. If you would like to
participate, recommend a speaker, or receive notice of the seminars,
contact Dr. Christy Pierce at christina.pierce [at]

| Title:
Marrying AMANDA and Having an Affair with SUSY
|
Abstract:
As a new member of the School of Physics, I would like to introduce myself while giving a brief
survey over the work of my Ph.D. thesis. The thesis includes two main parts: the integration of the
AMANDA into the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole, and the search for supersymmetric
particles with the IceCube detector.
IceCube and its predecessor AMANDA are very large detector arrays melted down into the Antarctic
polar icecaps. AMANDA has a higher instrumentation density and is located inside the one cubic
kilometer volume of IceCube. This makes it a valuable low energy upgrade to IceCube and increases
the sky coverage for low energy events. The thesis deals with the hardware efforts to merge both
detectors.
The second part of the thesis focuses on the possible detection of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles.
Several SUSY models include conservation laws (e.g. R-parity), which encourage the assumption of
pairwise SUSY particle production. Under certain circumstances long living charged slepton pairs are
predicted, which can produce distinguishable double track signatures in a large volume neutrino
detector. The work in the thesis contains the simulation of double tracks and the development of a
filter algorithm searching for the SUSY signatures.
